Burnt Forest Portrait - Kenya 2008. This is the beautiful face of one of the victims of the post election violence in Kenya in 2008. She, like hundreds of thousands of her Kikuyu brethren, was forced from her home in the middle of the night by a violent mob upset with the election results. In this region of Western Kenya people were killed and their homes and villages razed to the ground after a controversial election went to the Kikuyu candidate, Mwai Kibaki, after Raila Odinga, the Luhya candidate had initially been declared the winner. The backstory is old and deep rooted in more than just ethnic rivalry. The Kikuyu are the largest ethnic group in Kenya by a small margin, and were seen as the chosen or favored group among colonists. They have also essentially dominated Kenyan politics since independence, and the rivalries have grown considerably, although after this terrible incident, no violence has erupted in Kenya in over a decade.
