Ligonier, PA 2008. My grandmother Frieda was a legend in Pittsburgh for her stunning garden, where she cultivated heirloom dahlias year after year. She would dig up the bulbs in late August/early September and preserve them in garbage bags in the basement of her country house in Ligonier. Every May she would bring them out and replant them in a ritualistic manner which Im happy to say I had the opportunity to assist her with a few times. Here you see one of these dahlias in my Aunt Edies Garden, still going strong several years after she passed on.
