HURRICANE KATRINA
In August of 2005, I was documenting the famine in Niger when Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the gulf coast. I remember watching the footage of the storm on a tiny tv in my little courtyard hotel room in disbelief. I lived in New Orleans for a semester when I started an MPH program at Tulane in 1999 and naturally, I love that town. On my return trip from Niamey I was flying through Dallas, where instead of going home I decided to go to Houston. When I landed in Dallas, I had a message from my friend Pam that her parents were in Mississippi and had weathered the eye of the storm.
