Lone Palm, Sri Lanka, 2005. I took this photograph while shooting the aftermath of the devastating tsunami that ravaged Sri Lanka in 2004. It is taken on Arugum Bay, which was completely wiped out when the wave hit the island. Despite the tragic events that befell this beautiful island, for a brief moment it brought peace and cooperation between factions that had been warring for decades. This momentary respite paved the way for what has now become a lasting peace accord. This photograph is part of a collection in which I digitally manipulated the images to play with contrast and texture to create a surrealistic, painted effect.
