Razor Wire at the Border - South Africa, 2010. After the hotly contested elections in Zimbabwe in 2008 that saw terrible violence and intimidation at the hands of long time ‘President’ Robert Mugabe, Zimbabweans fled to South Africa by the thousands. Not prepared for this influx of immigrants, the South African government took rather drastic measures to curb the flow, including razor wire fences…some that even had electrical currents running through, and immigrants were being electrocuted. The UN intervened and convinced the South African government to refrain from such inhumane practices, but the razor wire remains to this day.
